Hi my lovely readers, I hope you enjoy my content and keep coming back :). My first plan is to publish a children portrait, but in that illustration the children clothe has some sort of pattern motif. So, I decide to write how to create a pattern in Inkscape tutorial instead. The work flow is easy, you will find out soon.

Open and create a new document, you also can add a background if you want. Now, draw 3 basic object, you can modify its shape if you want, and group them for pattern. Go to Object —> Pattern —> Objects to pattern. You have a pattern object now.

Next, draw a shape that we will filled with our pattern object.

Select the second shape, go to fill setting, and choose pattern. The shape will instantly filled with our pattern object. The pattern object’s name show on the top of the list.

If you active the second shape, you will see its have a handler that you can use to scale & rotate the pattern object that already applied. The x handler is an origin point. Go try play with them. You also can edit the pattern object from its box.

How to create a Pattern

Create Tiled Clones

Beside a simple technique that I just show you above, there is another method to make a pattern, which is by create a tiled clones. The base tile will connect to its clones that will result a continuous design. By the way, we will still use the same pattern object.

Create a rectangle object like shown below and make it group.

Enable the snap tool. For more clear which one, see picture below. Next, select the rectangle, go to Edit —> Clone —> Create Tiled Clones. Create Tiled Clones dialog box will appear, choose P1: Simple Translation, check row & columns, and enter its value to 3. Click Create button.

Tadaaaa, the base rectangle have its clones now. But, always remember that the original tile also under a new clone. So, delete it, and bring the base tile to top (Home). Still select the base tile, go to fill setting and choose the pattern. Your tile design should look something like this:
